Spontanious hub explosion
Tre’s wheel was hanging in the bike shop when the hub flange snapped creating a gunshot noise. It is something I have never heard of before. Has anyone else experienced a hub fail when the wheel wasn’t even being used?
Spontanious hub explosion

Is that a low flange Dura Ace???
man whoever built that wheel must just have no idea how to tension! =P JK if tre built it I’m sure it was legit which makes that really scary.
Improper tension and a hairline crack from riding radial lacing will do that. I’ve seen it before.
ya i believe so
that hub does not look radial lacing approved
Great, so my wheels are basically just shrapnel waiting to happen. I’m gonna fell real good then next time I hit a set of stairs thinking I may land with a piece of hub in my shin. =)
That’s fucking wild! Dam.
umm, Feltcher, you’re not actually jumping down stairs on old, radially laced low flanged road hubs…are you?
Mine is also radiallaced
Might have to re-lace it now.
I think I read in the papers that came with the hub that it was ok to radial lace it tough…
Happened to be looking at spoke patterns on Sheldon Brown’s site, and came across this:
“The other potential problem with radial wheels is that the spokes, trailing straight outward on the hub flange, can possibly rip the outer edge of the flange right off along the line of the spoke holes. This is most likely to happen with small-flange, 36 hole hubs, because there is less metal between the spoke holes. If a used hub is re-laced radially, the notches left by the old spokes can act as stress risers, further weakening the flange.”
proof that everyone should read and re read from sheldonbrown.com all the time.
if the hub is radial lace approved and not super hi spoke count i also wouldnt worry about it, but old 32/36 lo flange roadie stuff…sketchy.
my radial ellipse front has taken a huge beating but the hub’s designed for it.
was planning on lacing a dura ace hb 7600 front 36h radially, does anyone have any advice??
